The Projectionist
Short Film2018

STORY / PRODUCER / EDITOR / COLOURIST
Screen Australia, Epic Films,

CINEMÂCHÉ

18 minutes
My
filmmaking partner at

CINEMÂCHÉ

director Marcus McKenzie and Epic Films producer Kirsty Stark won funding
from Screen Australia to make this short film. A bit of a jack of all trades
on the project, I was involved with everything from story to casting to
budgeting. The multiple timelines rendered the edit a challenge, but drawing on my extensive experience from my music videos days I was able to juggle the material while remaining focused on storytelling. One bit of
inspiration actually derived from Martin Scorsese’s Masterclass. At the time we
were struggling to find the right beginning for the film. Martin spoke about
utilising shots from other scenes to create new and unexpected scenes and from
this I realised I could repurpose otherwise disparate and unused assets to create
the striking introduction the story required.

We finished
everything inhouse including the final DCP.

Close in Heart
Short Film2014

STORY / DIRECTOR / EDITOR / COLOURIST
Media Resource Centre, South Australian Film Corporation
8 Minutes
My wife (screenwriter and producer Danielle Tinker) and I
drew inspiration for the story from the experiences of a onetime flatmate of
ours. We secured funding from an initiative providing filmmakers with the
opportunity to garner a broadcast credit. It was an ambitious shoot with multiple
locations and filmmaking techniques as well as a debut performance from our lead
actor, Mit Lade. Fortunately, our lead actress Melissa Pengilly was quite experienced and really helped me
with the process as did my directing mentor for the project Bill Bennett. He
graciously offered me an insight into the methodology of an experienced and
accomplished feature film director, much of which I was able to put into
practice on this short and continue to use in my career.

Chasing a Dream
Mini-Documentary2010

DIRECTOR / EDITOR / COLOURIST

There
were three key creatives - a journalist, a DP and myself as the editor - tasked with producing the documentary, which we all directed at various stages. The journalist penned the questions and interviewed the subject Nobuyuki
for roughly an hour and then we spent 3 days filming him engaged in the various
activities. From beginning to end

I was only the creative present throughout the entire process of crafting
the piece and was empowered to autonomously shape the story in the edit based
on the assets we had accumulated.

DIRECTOR / PRODUCER / EDITOR / COLOURIST
Mushroom Group
The management for Australian soul, indie pop band
Lowrider approached me to direct a clip for their third single from their fourth
album Black Stones. Unfortunately, the band broke up right as the single
was being released and the clip seemed to disappear into the ether. I eventually took some of the filmmaking
ideas into my short film Close in Heart, but I still really love this clip’s
style and storytelling, particularly the way we covered the band and pulled together the various threads of the narrative.

October Solution: Lost
Music Video2015

DIRECTOR / PRODUCER / PRODUCTION DESIGNER / EDITOR / COLOURIST
Hidden Shoal Records

When
October Solution approached

CINEMÂCHÉ

to make a clip for the first single from their eponymous
debut album, we instantly knew upon hearing the track that we wanted to craft a
dream-like video that harkened back to the days of melancholic 80s pop. Featuring
a voyeuristic fishman, we built a detailed backstory to the mysterious events
depicted in the clip and then set about accumulating the retro props and
costumes we would require to evoke the dark atmospheric vibe.

COLOURIST

South Australian Film Corporation, Screen Australia,

SBS,

Dinosaur PTY LTD
13x26 minute episodes
To this day the first season of Danger 5 is arguably the
most complex colour grade I have been charged with designing and applying. As
the colourist on the series, I was fortunate enough to be afforded the
opportunity to test the looks on small shoots we filmed prior to principle
photography on both seasons. The 1960s vibe required for the first season was
actually coloured in Adobe After Effects employing numerous iterations of Colour
Finesse augmented with a healthy dose of effects. The second season, a 1980s
homage, was one of my first forays into DaVinci Resolve.

Although I was involved in concepting the pitch, owing to
a full slate of work at the time the Messrs clip was one of the few I was not “on
set” for, so I did not credit myself as a full director at the time. That said, like with the Chasing a Dream documentary, I was left to my own devices in the edit and grade and painstakingly
pieced together a narrative from a loose collection of abstract footage. The
clip received a Vimeo Staff Pick, my second, and has had 100k views on the

Henschke: Centenarian Vines
Brand Film2019

EDITOR / COLOURIST
Campfire

With my focus firmly on

CINEMÂCHÉ for the last 5 years I have more or less stopped freelancing. However,
when a former commercial collaborator of mine, Sam Wark, started Campfire, a creative
offshoot of the AV Company he works for, he asked me to come onboard and edit/colour
some branded content for them. This was the best of the bunch. Again faced with
a girth of assets and an interview over an hour long, I started by first shaping the
story utilising the interview audio. Once that stage had client approval I began adding the body, looking to draw on the best material aesthetically that also
served the story we were telling.
